A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:
In spring 2018, College of the Atlantic's Community Energy Center sponsored a workshop for students to get hands-on experience performing a building energy retrofit. Led by building scientist Curry Caputo (also a COA alum ’95), the retrofit workshop series successfully aimed to make the pottery studio more comfortable and reduce heating fuel and electrical consumption in line with COA’s energy framework, while providing opportunities for students to engage in experiential and practical work, make mistakes, and gain familiarity with a range of tools. News article available here: https://www.coa.edu/live/news/1597-energy-retrofit-is-all-hands-effort College of the Atlantic’s Building and Grounds department strives to minimize material waste during any renovations. In the 2014-15 academic year the college renovated two small buildings on campus (residential Cottage House and Pottery Studio) and the majority of the interior materials were donated and recycled. Damaged drywall and pressure-treated wood were discarded. The college does not have permanent construction waste containers: This is specifically to encourage repair, reuse, and recycling of construction materials.
