Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Community Engaged Scholars Program
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The Engaged Scholar program is a new program that develops and supports students' commitment to and capacity for sustained, informed, and deliberate community engagement. By enrolling in the program, students commit to: (1) consistently engage in community work throughout their undergraduate careers, and (2) take an effort to learn from, and apply learning to, those experiences. These engagement opportunities include the opportunities provided by the social and environmental for-profit and non-profit agencies in the local community.Throughout the program, students integrate this engaged work into a reflective portfolio that helps them to articulate their personal story of engagement and illustrate their commitment to bridging practice and theory in the service of a public good. The community engaged scholars program gives meaningful recognition for sustained engagement over several years. The program also accounts for paid engagement, making it accessible to students who cannot participate in unpaid engagement.
