A brief description of other strategies to reduce the impact of commuting:
Started by students in 2008, the CC Bike Co-op aims to empower people to maintain and repair their own bikes and to negate the necessity of cars within a five-mile radius of campus. The co-op offers free classes in bike repair and maintenance. Student volunteers also keep a self-service bike shop stocked with tools, workbenches, and used parts. They also gather abandoned bicycles, “resurrect them” to keep them from becoming trash, and sell the refurbished bikes. The co-op is located in the garages along the parking lot in front of Tutt Science Center, on Uintah. It is open and staffed weekday afternoons, with classes held each block to teach basic bicycle maintenance. Additionally, the CC Bike Share incentivizes students and employees to bike even if they themselves do not have the means to purchase a bike. They may rent a bike for a day or the block to use at their own discretion.
