A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
The Student Leadership, Involvement & Community Engagement office offers several leadership training opportunities to expand student's knowledge about themselves and others, especially within the concept of leadership development:
- 'Campus Step Up' is a social justice retreat that encourages students to become more aware about issues pertaining to diversity and cross-cultural communication in a safe environment that focuses on self-reflection, education, and personal growth.
- 'Distinguished Speakers' are sponsored or co-sponsored speakers that come to campus. Past speakers include Dr. Patch Adams (direct sponsor), Douglass Coutts (co-sponsor), and Greg Mortenson (co-sponsor).
- 'LeaderShape' is a week-long experience that provides participants the hands on opportunity to become stronger leaders while respecting personal values and the dignity of all people.
- 'The REAL Experience' is a certificate program that allows participants to attend workshops pertaining to effective, intellectual, and cultural leadership. Students may attend just one workshop of interest or work towards the completion of varied certificates.
- 'President’s Leadership Program' is a series of academic leadership classes that provide opportunities for participating students to expand their knowledge about themselves, diversity issues, values and ethics in the greater context of leadership development. Students may participate in any year of the program by applying in March for the following semester.
- 'Student of Color Leadership Retreat' (SoCLR) is a day-long event that is aimed to strengthen cross-cultural relationships across campus and to critically examine various issues and isms that pertain to living in a multicultural and diverse community.
