A brief description of the incentive program(s):
Sustainability Curriculum Innovation Grants, sponsored by the President's Sustainability Commission and School of Global Environmental Sustainability (SoGES), are open to all levels of faculty and instructors in any academic program and are awarded annually through a competitive RFP process that is peer-reviewed.
In 2022, a positive outcome of previous success in 2020 and 2021 was a significant increase in funding to allow seven proposals to be funded (prior funding had supported between two and four proposals). The additional funding was provided by the President's Office in recognition of the course development grants directly supporting curriculum goals in the University's strategic plan. Seven proposals were awarded in 2022.
Another positive outcome was proposals were received from all eight colleges on campus, including multiple interdisciplinary proposals. The proposals funded in 2022 were:
- A Radical Library of Ceramic Materials
- Circular Economics for the Built Environment
- Development and Integration of Sustainability Concepts into Introductory-Level Geoscience
- Economics of Environmental Sustainability
- Finance for a Better World
- Global Product Flows: A Teaching Toolkit for Integrating Supply Chain Management and Sustainability
- Sustainability-in-LIFE: Infusing Sustainability Principles and Science into the Introductory Biology Curriculum at CSU

A brief description of the incentives that academic staff who participate in the program(s) receive:
All faculty (including all ranks of professor and instructor) from any academic program on campus can submit an individual proposal up to $5,000 or a team proposal up to $10,000. Interdisciplinary proposals are encouraged and receive preference in the review process. Funds may be used for time spent on developing new course content, research of topics, collaborative efforts with others who possess different expertise, assistance with material development, or other endeavors that would benefit curriculum contributions. Recipients also have access to the University sustainability teaching toolkit and are asked to contribute to it.
In addition to the proposal funds, SoGES provides in-kind support including curriculum development expertise, networking with subject matter experts, meeting rooms, online hosting of resources developed, videography, video editing, event planning and logistics, development of communications materials, and other support as appropriate.
