A brief description of the institution’s participation in an external network of anchor institutions:
CSU Spur is an immersive learning experience that opened in Denver, Colorado in 2021. Spur aims to provide community education, services, and serve as an economic stimulus to the community. CSU Spur is part of the Coalition for Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) and the Democracy Collaborative Anchor Learning Network. Serving as an Anchor Institution for Denver and greater metro area community is fundamental to the mission of Spur. This campus is meant to be truly for everyone, as a free and open-to-the-public learning experience. People of all ages and backgrounds can visit Spur and utilize the many resources it provides. Field-trips and educational programming specific to K-12 students encourage early involvement in science.
Spur opened two of three buildings, Vida and Terra, in 2022 with Hydra expected to open in 2023. Vida focuses on animal and human health, offering equine-assisted therapy, a donor-subsidized veterinary clinic, and equine rehabilitation clinic. Through Vida, not only are important services provided, but the public gains access to firsthand experience with CSU's world-class veterinary medicine program and the opportunity to see research in progress. Terra focuses on food and agriculture, offering community cooking classes, first-hand access to see CSU researchers working on agriculture innovation, youth agriculture education, green-roof spaces showcasing sustainable urban designs, and much more.
Spur is dedicated to enriching the community, through CSU-led citizen science efforts, youth and life-long education; neighborhood renovations; internships and career opportunities specific to the local community; scholarships and higher education programming for local students; local purchasing and dedicated public art spaces.
