A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation:
With support from the Dean of Students Office, the Concordia Student Union (CSU) Orientation of 2014 was themed "Getting to Know Your Community" and had 2 main events:
- the Clubs Street Fair
- Rethink Sustainability Fest
A sustainability director was hired by CSU to ensure that Orientation 2014 adheres to sustainability principles.
Environmental, Social and Economic dimensions of sustainability were addressed:
- Environmental: One of the event's goal was to reduce waste as much as possible, tending towards zero waste.
- Social: Promotion of local artists and local community groups as well as emphasizing the role of community and social justice in sustainability.
- Economic: Reducing cost (and waste) by using reusable dishware offered at low cost by a student project called "R4 dish project". Make events accessible to students with financial needs through solidarity concert tickets.
Following the event, a report was made about the goals of sustainability & waste management in orientation events which showed an overall waste diversion of 89% (see report in URL below).
