Open Data for Water Conservation

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
During a 2016 summer drought, Cornell quickly developed a new open-source data platform to share daily water use comparisons to historic baselines for nearly 160 buildings on campus. Using this tool in combination with an engagement campaign, the campus was able to set and achieve a goal of reducing water use 20% over the duration of the drought. As a result of combined water reduction efforts, campus was able to reduce overall water use by 30% in residential facilities and 22% average in the first months of implementation. The tool can be used alongside existing building energy metering in the campus Energy Dashboard and allows student and community members to explore how personal behaviors impact the energy-water nexus.
