Has the institution engaged in a structured assessment process during the previous three years to improve diversity, equity and inclusion on campus?:
Yes
A brief description of the assessment process and the framework, scorecard(s) and/or tool(s) used:
The Toward New Destinations diversity framework requires that each college and administrative unit annually identify three diversity initiatives in support of four core principles (composition, engagement, inclusion, achievement) for seven constituent groups: undergraduate students, graduate and professional students, postdoctoral associates and academic professionals, staff, faculty, the off-campus community, and the extended Cornell communities of parents, alumni, friends, and donors. The 2016 TND Institutional Planning Document provides colleges and units with guidance to support development of annual initiatives. The undergraduate Student Assembly has designed a similar initiative for student organizations called United Student Body.
Background information about the Toward New Destinations diversity framework and objectives, a summary of highlights of the 2013-14 TND initiatives and a breakdown of the 2014-15 initiatives is available in the October 2014 Diversity and Inclusion Report "Toward New Destinations."
Additionally, the university regularly surveys the climate of diversity and inclusion across all populations. Leadership for the respective areas are provided results of these surveys and expected to take action to address any areas of concern.
Does the assessment process address campus climate by engaging stakeholders to assess the attitudes, perceptions and behaviors of faculty, staff, administrators and students, including the experiences of underrepresented groups?:
Yes
Does the assessment process address student outcomes related to diversity, equity and success (e.g. graduation/success and retention rates for underrepresented groups)?:
Yes
Does the assessment process address employee outcomes related to diversity and equity (e.g. pay and retention rates for underrepresented groups)?:
Yes
A brief description of the most recent assessment findings and how the results are used in shaping policy, programs and initiatives:
We are currently running our faculty, academic professionals, and faculty climate surveys - we don't expect to have those current results until January, 2017. On the student side, there was a climate assessment conducted in the spring, 2015 - with another planned for spring 2017. The results of this assessment, as well as other climate indicators helped to inform a restructuring of the Division of Student and Campus Life to enhance and emphasize an inclusive student experience. In March 2016, Ryan Lombardi, vice president for student and campus life re-conceptualized the Dean of Students position to focus predominantly on inclusion, identity development, advocacy and support. Vijay Pendakur, a scholar and national expert on these issues, will begin January 3, 2017, as the Dean of Students and will serve as Lombardi’s chief deputy on all student life matters. Under the new structure, the Office of the Dean of Students consists of Cornell United Religious Work, Student Development Diversity Initiatives, the Asian and Asian-American Center, the LGBT Resource Center, the Women’s Resource Center, Student and Community Support, and the International Students and Scholars Office. Additionally, to support the realignment, there were four new positions created and five new hires: including an assistant director, LGBT Resource Center; an assistant director, Women’s Resource Center; an assistant director, Asian and Asian-American Center; an assistant director, Student Development Diversity Initiatives; and an assistant dean of students, Student Development Diversity Initiatives.
Are the results of the most recent structured diversity and equity assessment shared with the campus community?:
Yes
A brief description of how the assessment results are shared with the campus community:
The survey results are shared with the various campus governance organizations as well, individual college/unit leaders shared their respective area results with their teams. Also, the results are available publicly on the Institutional Research and Planning website http://irp.dpb.cornell.edu/.
