Cornell’s Atkinson Center offers a faculty-in-residence fellowship for faculty to develop cross-disciplinary courses in the sustainability field. This offers a teaching buyout for a semester for fellows who want to focus on advancing sustainability through a number of activities, including new course development.
Jeff Niederdeppe, Communication, for instance, conducts innovative research on the urgent need to engage young adults in efforts to promote and sustain public policies that hold potential to mitigate climate change. Niederdeppe will build on prior research to understand the potential roles for emotion in effective climate-change communication. He will study the motivating roles of humor and anger in promoting climate change action and develop messages that use emotion to increase political engagement. He will then work with organizations such as the Environmental Defense Fund to explore putting this knowledge into practice.r fellowship, she will analyze the survey results, compile a summary report, and develop outreach initiatives with her organizational partners. This research will illuminate the factors that lead local governments—which run the majority of U.S. communities—to adopt sustainability policies.
