Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Anabel's Grocery

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Anabel’s grocery is a low cost grocery provider on Cornell’s central campus that is “for students, by students”. Their mission states “Anabel’s Grocery provides nutritious, affordable food for all Cornell students through a student-run grocery store and offers educational programs that create a fun, inclusive, empowering community around quality food, food choices, wellness, and positive social change.” Anabel’s is an innovative and needed solution to food insecurity, which is one of today’s largest sustainability problems. Food insecurity is a problem worldwide and Cornell University is not exempt. “The 2015 Perceptions of Undergraduate Life and Student Experiences Survey indicates that 1 in 5 students skip meals due to financial constraints.” (Annabel’s About Page) Anabel’s addresses this problem by providing conveniently located low cost groceries and subsidies for those who qualify. Additionally, Anabel’s provides nutrition and cooking classes to educate students about what they are eating. Anabel’s groceries are less expensive than most local grocery store and the on-campus location makes it accessible for all students. Anabel’s ends their blog post “Food insecurity is still a misunderstood, stigmatized, and multifaceted issue - and it is a real problem on campus. Anabel’s Grocery wants to help break this stigma and help students understand that it is a real problem on Cornell campus”.
