Documentation

A copy of the institution’s inventory of its sustainability course offerings and descriptions:
Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
One

A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
Each year, the previous year's inventory of sustainability-focused and sustainability-inclusive courses is checked alongside the updated University Course Catalog to ensure each course is still being taught and that the professor and course description are up-to-date and meet the sustainability criteria. Additionally, new courses are added to the list if they meet the criteria.

Semester at Sea programs and other study abroad programs that are not directly affiliated with Cornell were not added to the inventory because they do not satisfy what STARS considers part of the course roster. Programs like Shoals Marine Lab and other courses that include an abroad trip, however, were added to the sustainable course inventory because they are directly affiliated with Cornell. Courses that were not added to the list (and in few cases, deleted from the list) include honors thesis credits, research credits, independent study options, special topics, and internship credits. Cross-listed classes were only added once.

A public-facing version of the sustainability course list can be found at http://www.atkinson.cornell.edu/education/curricula/index.php and a scaled back version can be found on the University Registrar website here http://courses.cornell.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=41&poid=20096.

How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections

A brief description of how courses with multiple offerings or sections were counted:
Crosslisted courses were only counted once. However, there are courses that co-meet with both undergraduate and graduate students. These courses were counted both in the undergraduate and graduate lists.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Although special topics, internships, etc. are not included in the spreadsheet inventory, these courses (if they include sustainability content) are included in the list provided in the link above, which is primarily meant for student use.

The document supporting the total number of departments is attached in PRE-5. The number of departments offering sustainability courses was calculated in excel by finding the count of distinct course departments indicated on the sustainability course inventory. https://courses.cornell.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=31&poid=15440
