Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Student-designed ‘TCAT to Trails’ map
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Cornell students on the Design Connect team, a group within the College of Architecture, Art and Planning, developed a guide to improve access to the outdoors. The ‘TCAT to Trails’ map created a detailed directory to outdoor adventure via public transit by highlighting “the parks and natural areas close to Ithaca, explaining the bus stops and connections, … links, planning tools, where to find bus schedules and the wider Tompkins County perspective.” The students created this guide to address the environmental justice issue that many people don’t have cars, so going to waterfalls, trails, and parks can be inequitable and difficult. Based on a survey conducted by the students, 44% of TCAT riders did not have access to a car, and 66% had never taken a TCAT bus to access nature areas. Since access to green space is directly correlated with cognitive benefits and improvements in well-being, providing a more equitable availability of natural spaces.
