Dallas College follows State of Texas environmental health, occupational health, and public safety codes. The Dallas College Police Department, Facilities Services Division, Academic Affairs including a Lab Safety Committee, and the Critical Response Office oversee workplace safety and emergency preparedness and response. Dallas College is in the process of establishing a more comprehensive and centralized Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) program to support needs across Facilities, Health Sciences, Laboratory Safety, and HAZMAT Compliance.
The goals of the new EH&S Program will be to:
- Develop/maintain operating policies & procedures
- Provide health & safety awareness & training
- Encourage and promote the use of safer work equipment, materials and supplies
Lab Safety
- Establish Hazardous materials tracking and handling procedures
- Establish Incident/Claims handling, investigation, tracking and trending/metrics
- Implement a loss prevention program
The Dallas College Police Department supports the College Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program. Dallas College CERT members are volunteers who assist Dallas College first responders in addressing college emergencies. CERT assignments may include providing directions/instructions, communicating emergency procedures, relaying instructions from first responders, crowd management, and providing basic first aid and assistance to others when it does not involve the risk of bodily injury to the CERT member. CERT may also be requested to assist in regular planned college events. CERT members do not perform tasks such as light search and rescue in damaged building; these tasks may be performed by community emergency response teams associated with municipalities. In high-risk incidents such as an intruder lock-down incident, CERT members are directed to follow the same emergency procedures as any other College employee and only assist first responder through setting the correct example and following established emergency procedures.
Dallas College CERT members, in addition to participating in regular drills and locations CERT meetings, are required to be trained in “CERT Member’s Role in Emergency Procedures” and “Stop the Bleed.” The “Stop the Bleed” training shows CERT members how to control life-threatening bleeding and how to utilize resources, such as traumas dressings and tourniquets. Emergency procedures training and “Stop the Bleed” training is also offered to non-CERT member employees. From the Spring/Summer 2018 there have been 169 employees trained in “CERT Member’s Role in Emergency Procedures” and 149 employees trained in “Stop the Bleed”. The CERT programs at each Dallas College location are in a rebuilding phrase due to the pandemic, the organization’s restructuring, and retirements.
