A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Fact sheets about sustainability on campus are included in the orientation folders that are given to all entering freshman and transfer students. The orientation page of the Duquesne website contains links to the incoming freshmen student and transfer/graduate student guide to living on-campus, both of which contain information about sustainable dining options offered by the university. It was also planned for the Center for Environmental Research and Education to have their own table during orientation where students can come to learn more information about sustainability on campus and ways to get involved. These plans are set to take effect at next year's orientation. Additionally, students that are entering the Environmental Studies/Science undergraduate and graduate programs learn about their courses, which include sustainability on campus.
The number of students that attended orientation was nearly 2,000 this year, which includes freshmen students, first-year transfer students, and student leaders of Orientation. Data for the breakdown of number of students that attended orientation were unavailable for this year. Therefore, our calculations assumed that 90% of the 1,473 full-time entering freshman, as well as 25% of the 204 transfer students, attended orientation. There is no centralized graduate orientation, as each program holds their own events. Therefore, we only accounted for the students entering programs in the Center for Environmental Research and Education. Data regarding number of new freshman, transfer and graduate students incoming during 2023 was obtained from the 2023-2024 Duquesne University fact book. Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Attached is sustainability flyer that students normally receive during orientation. Flyers were not handed out during orientation this year. However, all Duquesne students had opportunities to receive the flyer at various events during the first few weeks of classes. It is estimated that 10% of students received flyers.
