As an extension of the Living Green platform at Durham College, the Green Team exists to provide students with the opportunity to contribute towards the development of creative ideas and solutions aimed at advancing campus sustainability initiatives. The Green Team works with Durham College’s Sustainability Committee members to develop goals, raise awareness and participate in sustainability events and projects. Volunteers are eligible for co-curricular recognition and play an active role in transforming the college. Green Team members are actively involved in campus-wide outreach campaigns and peer-to-peer student engagement throughout the year.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):
Students have the opportunity each year to apply to the Green Team, which is recognized through our Co-Curricular program. Student recruitment for the Green Team takes place at the beginning of each semester as well as throughout the semester. Students are eligible for volunteer and leadership points which go towards their record of involvement and leadership. Students apply online and are interviewed for a select number of positions (15-20/year). They are considered the Sustainability experts amongst their peers and lead all outreach and engagement campaigns.

Students are given a tour of the campus and facilities by the Sustainability Coordinator and key facilities Managers and are informed of past and present sustainability initiatives. They are then part of a brainstorming session where a new project idea is created to focus on for the academic year.

There is some budget from the Sustainability Office to encourage student projects and support students so that they can attend core events and conferences. Past events and conferences include: IMPACT! The Co-operators Youth Program for Sustainability Leadership Conference, OSEA's Powering Prosperity Awards. A fund was also created through our e-waste program to support student projects and events.

Students are required to complete 80 hours of volunteer placement hours. In 2014, the Sustainability Office became a placement host for students and has served over 20 students over the past 2 years.

Key professors inform their students of the opportunity and students submit their resumes, which are forwarded to the Sustainability Office. Student interviews are arranged and chosen based on credentials and fit.

Placement students are given a tour of the facilities with appropriate Facilities Managers and are given a briefing of the campuses past and current sustainability initiatives, programs, etc. Students are trained how to manage programs and are responsible for project assistance, etc.

The Sustainability Office is a Placement Host for interested students seeking completion of the required 80 placement hours. Programs range from Environmental Technology, Operations and the International Office. Resources, such as the supervision from the Sustainability Coordinator are allocated to this program.
