To calculate the number of students involved in community service, the Sustainability Manager obtained results of the annual Sophomore Survey from the Office of Institutional Research from spring 2021. Of the 360 students who responded, 47 indicated that they had been involved in community service that year. 47 is 13 percent of 360. For a rough estimate of student community service engagement, we applied that percentage (13%) to the entire student body, resulting in an estimated 760 students doing community service.

Note: The Emerson Prison Initiative (EPI) provides students incarcerated at Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Concord (MCI Concord) with an opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree in media, literature and culture from faculty at Emerson College. We do not count this program as volunteering during regular work hours because faculty are offered a stipend for teaching with the EPI. https://emerson.edu/epi/who-we-are/courses-faculty
