The Equity Council is a group of students, faculty, and staff who work together on issues of equity and inclusion. Mission Statement: 'The Council has listened to the concerns of students, staff, and faculty from historically underserved communities. Their experiences place faces and names to the equity gaps that exist on our campus. We are therefore compelled and committed to take actions that improve outcomes for the most underserved members of our community. Over the course of the 2016-17 academic year, we are proposing a paradigm shift, grounded in the College's long-standing diversity efforts, to an institution-wide approach that establishes a culture of inquiry, grounded in equity, aimed at supporting the success of all our students.' A brief description of the institution’s cultural competence trainings and activities for each of the groups identified above:
Some students take part in programs focused on cultural competence. In one, weekly in-depth processing of program content in small groups, creative project responses to seminar readings, uncensored writings, and weekly consciousness logs facilitate development of qualitative, reflective, analytical, and creative modes of inquiry. Seminar response essays and giving and receiving peer feedback on the integration essays will foster integrative, independent, and critical thinking. The Fall Equity Symposium is designed to empower the Evergreen community with tools to create a stronger sense of belonging on campus. Additionally, the symposium is designed to have a meaningful impact in communities beyond the collegial hemisphere. Participants receive the opportunity to further develop their cultural-competency skills as well as their understanding of how they can contribute to fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment.
