A brief description of the postconsumer food waste composting program:
Furman composts post-consumer food waste at the majority of dining hall meals. Next to trash cans are distinctly labeled compost bins, above which are large posters listing the items which should be placed in the compost bins and explaining which items to avoid, such as plastic products (straws and small plastic cups). There have also been several days in which students from the Environmental Action Group (EAG) stand near the bins and instruct students what to throw in while explaining the composting system. The university also composts post-consumer waste at designated green events where compostable materials have been introduced. Furman’s food service provider uses compostable napkins, plates, cups, and trash bags. The use of these compostable products and food waste provides an effective composting cycle, leading to a quality product.
