Furman University’s Energy Efficiency Eco-Philanthropy Project – During the 2015-2016 academic year, the Environmental Community of Students (ECOS), a first-year engaged living program, received an $80,000 donation from a local donor to work with three local nonprofit organizations, a church, a soup kitchen and a homeless shelter, to help them improve their energy efficiency through renewable energy systems and system upgrades. A Public Engagement Process to Create a Community Based Vision and Open Space Plan - During a three-week public engagement process, a team of faculty and students facilitated community-based public participation to create a vision and open space plan for a 27-acre vacant lot in a low-income neighborhood. This poster presented on both the process and the outcome. Smart and Sustainable Presentations: In this workshop a campus metabolism framework will be presented using Furman University as a case study, and then participants will work to map the inflows, transformations, and material outflows of various key campus resources (water, energy, food, and materials) and identify the key stakeholders within each system for their own university. Furman University’s Shi Center for Sustainability hosts a Student Sustainability Fellows program that supports undergraduate students in sustainability research and internships on campus and in the surrounding community.
