Summer Scholars
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Summer Scholars is an academic week-long residential summer camp for high school students, run by the Furman University Admissions Department. Current Furman students serve as camp counselors, stewarding the campers through a series of social engagements and independent living. Courses are proposed and led by qualified Furman Faculty and Staff. Of the six courses offered, three have components of sustainability education within broader topics (Rhythms of Justice, Live Well, and Pre-Health). One course is devoted to sustainability in its entirety. The "Sustainability in Action" course uses field experiences and classwork around Greenville and across campus to explore examples of sustainable living and careers in action. Topics include local foods, urban planning, energy conservation and social justice. Students develop an action plan to apply what they've learned in their own communities.
