A brief description of the institution’s green athletics program:
Furman's Green Athletics program was started by two Sustainability Science majors and supported by the Athletic Director and staff with the goal of creating sustainable change within the athletics program. Because each team has specific constraints based on the nature of their sport, each team can pursue positive change on an individual level. A representative was chosen for each team and baseline data on sustainable practices was collected for each team through a self-reporting platform. Categories include equipment management, waste management, game day operations, volunteering/service, and team-specific initiatives. A yearly, paid position for a Green Athletics Fellowship through the Shi Institute for Sustainability supports the program and ensures continuity over time. Additionally, teams are now eligible for a new yearly award, the "Sustainability in Athletics" award.
