A brief description of the institution’s third party certified land holdings:
Furman University was again honored with the 2020 Tree Campus USA® recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management. Furman University achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, managing a campus tree-care plan, dedicating annual expenditures for its campus tree program, observing Arbor Day, and offering a student service-learning project.

The George G. Willis Jr. Arboretum seeks to educate students on Furman’s campus, as well as the nearby communities of Greenville and Travelers Rest, about tree diversity, identification, conservation, care, and value. It ultimately strives to be a model for other arboretums in the Southeast and across the nation. The focus on native species makes the George G. Willis Jr. Arboretum representational of arboriculture in upstate South Carolina, and it will provide learning and research opportunities regarding the region’s arboriculture.
