A brief description of the institution’s professional development opportunities on sustainability in the curriculum:
Affiliate Faculty Program
Faculty support is a cornerstone of the Shi Institute’s strategy to promote sustainability related interdisciplinary teaching, scholarship, and service. The institute hosts and coordinates the Faculty Affiliate Program for faculty across all university disciplines, designed to stimulate interdisciplinary conversation and collaboration around campus and community sustainability. With more than 65 affiliates spanning almost every department on campus, the institute’s program supports its members with a pan-disciplinary leadership team and provides informal networking, grant-making opportunities, curriculum development, and information-sharing around sustainability.
AASHE Center for Teaching Sustainability Across the Curriculum
In an effort to increase the accessibility and diversity of sustainability-oriented training and support for faculty and staff, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) has partnered with 14 Centers for Teaching Sustainability Across the Curriculum to offer workshops and other professional development opportunities on sustainability in the curriculum. These centers were selected through a competitive application process. Furman is honored to be one of the selected centers, and one of two centers representing the Southeastern US. The goal of each center is to accelerate the infusion of sustainability content into the curriculum. Each year Furman hosts a national multi-day interactive workshop that attracts sustainability faculty and staff from around the country to share best practices around different sustainability topics. Our most recent workshop focused on the Campus as a Sustainability Living Learning Lab.
