A “green leaf” course or academic program focuses on learning about sustainability, i.e., meeting our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The green leaf designation recognizes offerings that contribute significantly to students’ understanding and practice of sustainability. These offerings extend beyond environmental management, natural resources protection and conservation studies alone to embrace economic development and social responsibility.

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:
Deans and directors of colleges, schools and institutes were invited to identify courses, or have their departments or their Sustainability Studies Advisory Council (SSAC) reps do so, using the definition above. Courses in the catalog with pertinent summaries were included if self-evident (e.g., "Sustainability in Action), otherwise faculty or syllabi were consulted. Leads of sustainability-focused and sustainability-related academic programs were also invited to nominate courses. Final decision was made by the Provost's Fellow of Sustainability Studies, in consultation with SSAC representatives.
