In academic year 2013-14, the Center for Teaching and Faculty Excellence within the Office of the Provost began providing $750 stipends to faculty members to redesign their general education courses so that they meet sustainability learning outcomes and qualify for the Green Leaf designation. The Provost's Fellow for Sustainability Studies leads the workshops. 11 general education courses (6 in English, 3 in History, 2 in Statistics) were redesigned through this program in 2013-14. The goal of this course redesign program is to create a Green Leaf path through the general education requirements that is open to all George Mason University undergraduates.

Faculty participants receive a $750 stipend for attending a course redesign workshop, producing a Green Leaf version of the general education course they teach, and teaching the course itself.
