A brief description of how the employee educators are selected (1st program):
The Mason Faculty and Staff Green Patriot program is a peer-to-peer outreach program designed to support Mason's Office of Sustainability and their pursuit of Mason's Public Commitments and Sustainability Vision. The program's objectives are to ensure that faculty and staff become informed sustainability representatives for their respective departments, become familiar with the Green Office program, and are active stakeholders in helping to reduce Mason's environmental impact. Green Patriots help to increase environmental knowledge and foster positive environmental behavior by providing effective tools and information to their colleagues and coworkers.
Individuals interested in serving as a Green Patriot will fill out an application form available on the Office of Sustainability website. Participation in the program will be contingent on the approval of an individuals’ supervisor, and the completion of a Green Patriots Service Contract, committing them to their term of service.

Green Patriots are trained on various sustainability topics hosted by the Office of Sustainability on a regular basis. Regular peer-to-peer meetings with Green Patriots with diverse backgrounds and knowledge allow participants to share best sustainable practices across the university.

Green Office liaisons are our Green Office champions for their specified office. They voluntarily contact the Mason Office of Sustainability and request to have their office Green Office certified.

The Green Office liaisons receive the Green Office presentation, and are educated by the Mason Office of Sustainability about how to implement green practices in their office. They are also the contact point and communicate any new initiatives to the staff members.

Mason's Office of Sustainability provides offices with educational material and assists with implementing Green Office policies in the workplace. For example, they provide light switch prompts, proper labeling of recycling, and assist with setting up double-sided printing.

A brief description of how the employee educators are selected (all other programs):
George Mason University announced in its 2014-2024 Strategic Plan that it will strive to be a model well-being university. This goal was possible due to the work of the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being and the Well-Being Learning Community which provided direction, definition, and metrics for this goal. The Center for the Advancement of Well-Being invited representives from key stakeholders teams across campus who had an interest in helping the Mason community thrive together.

The Well-Being Learning Community members meet monthly to learn and discuss about well-being research on topics such as the benefits of having a purpose, the benefits of a positive attitude, how to build resiliency in individuals and communities, and how to measure well-being. These ambassadors are empowered to go back to their respective departments to apply and practice well-being concepts.

The well-being learning community is supported by the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being who leads the activities and discussions. In addition, the human resources department at the university also provides support to this group and puts programs in place to further the well-being goals.
