Permaculture Design Certification Course

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
The Permaculture Design Certification course is the first of its kind to be offered at Mason. This is a 72-hour certification course led by Wayne Weiseman of the Permacultre Project, LLC. This course covers subjects like agroecology, ecology, plant biology, animal husbandry, environmental conservation, food production, natural building, sustainable resource collection and use, renewable energy, and many more. This course was a result of identifying and responding to a market need and gap in the Mid-Atlantic region.

A brief description of any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation (if not reported above):
The Permaculture Design Certification course has nearly doubled since its first year in 2012 with 37 participants ranging in background from federal to private industry, to students, to retirees, to state employees. The positive impact of this program thus far has already taken shape both on Mason’s campus and around the region.
