George Mason University's general education program for all undergraduates, the Mason Core, includes required work in the following areas: Arts, Global Understanding, Literature, Natural Science, and Social & Behavioral Sciences. The Natural Science learning outcomes include: - Understand how scientific inquiry is based on investigation of evidence from the natural world, and that scientific knowledge and understanding: a) evolves based on new evidence, and b) differs from personal and cultural beliefs; - Recognize and articulate the relationship between the natural sciences and society and the application of science to societal challenges (e.g., health, conservation, sustainability, energy, natural disasters, etc.). Additionally, the academic programs listed above have applied for and received the Green Leaf designation. George Mason's Sustainability Studies Academic Council evaluates programs' sustainability learning outcomes as part of the approval process for Green Leaf designation. The Green Leaf designation recognizes offerings that contribute significantly to students' understanding and practice of sustainability. These offerings extend beyond environmental management, natural resources protection and conservation studies alone as Mason's Green Leaf curricula comprise both sustainability-focused and sustainability-related courses. Program earning outcomes from this Green Leaf designation include preparing students to be scholars in sustainability assessment and innovation, addressing and solving complex challenges of realizing sustainability at local to global scales.

Data retrieved from George Mason Office of Institutional Research report on Degrees Conferred by Program for 2015-16 year, which includes Summer 2015, Fall 2015, and Spring 2016. All students who earned Bachelors degrees (5,127) are counted because they addressed sustainability learning outcomes associated with the Mason Core. Graduate students who completed Green Leaf graduate programs (81) are counted as well.
