George Mason University has a range of employee wellness services including counseling, referral, and well-being services. Mason's health benefits (a choice of a PPO, HMO, and HDHP) includes an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that provides staff and faculty and their families up to 4 free visits per instance on a range of issues including marital and family problems; child and adult care, work-related concerns, depression and anxiety; financial or legal problems and more.
The health insurance plans also cover wellness doctor visits at 100% including, but not limited to, a routine annual check up, routine immunizations, two routine dental check ups, pap test, mammography, prostate exam, and colonoscopy (as appropriate based on age). Participants in the PPO and HDHP also have access to no cost health coaching. Additionally, all Mason employees have access to CommonHealth, the wellness benefit for Commonwealth employees. This includes wellness education, fitness center discounts, and a special rate on WeightWatchers.
In the university's 2014 strategic plan, Mason created a goal to "become a model well-being university that allows all of its members to thrive". The university aims to become the first well-being university, providing a place for all members of the Mason community an environment where they can personally thrive while contributing to the overall mission. The university-wide Center for the Advancement of Well-Being provides a focal point for our efforts to promote positive change. Initiatives within the center includes free weekly well-being practices such as yoga and meditation, and Spring into Well-Being, an annual multi-week celebration of events and engagement opportunities across campus to help the Mason community increase awareness of Mason's Well-Being University Initiative.
Students also have multiple centers and opportunities to address well-being through Mason’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Psychological services include crisis consultation, group counseling/workshops, initial consultation and time limited individual counseling (Psychological), initial consultation and time limited medication management (Psychiatric), referral and case management and faculty/staff consultations on addressing student concerns.
