Green Game

A brief description of the campaign:
Since 2014, when George Mason University joined the Atlantic 10 Conference, Mason has held an annual ‘Green Game.’ This game serves as our entry into RecycleMania’s national GameDay Basketball competition, and is an exciting collaboration between the Office of Sustainability, Mason Athletics, Sodexo, Mason Recycling and Waste Management, and EagleBank Arena. Mason's goal every year is to hit the ‘zero-waste’ mark, which means that 90+ percent of waste is diverted from trash to composting and recycling.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
With the help of over 50 volunteers and the dedication of Mason’s partners at EagleBank Arena, Mason Athletics, Sodexo on March 4, 2020, the university achieved 88.1% waste diversion from trash to recycling and composting. In 2019, Mason was third in the national GameDay Challenge, overseen by RecycleMania. For comparison, Mason had a 50% diversion rate at the 2014 Green Game.

Green Office Program

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
The Green Office Program is a certification process that recognizes offices on Mason’s campuses for reducing their environmental footprint. The program outlines a specific set of ‘green’ measures and actions (some of which are required, some of which are optional) that departments and offices can implement in their workspace to become Green Office Certified.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
As of April 2020, 12 Mason offices were Green Office certified. Participants cited increase awareness of environmental stewardship and have begun creating meaningful departmental changes.
