Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Virginia Environmental Justice Summit

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
George Mason University students, with support from faculty advisors, planned and hosted the Virginia Environmental Justice Summit (VEJS) in March 2020. VEJS was the first event of its kind in Virginia – an environmental justice summit for students, by students. It brought together undergraduate and graduate students from throughout the state in multidisciplinary conversations around issues of environmental justice.

Activists, organizations, and students from an array of disciplines, institutions, and communities throughout Virginia participated in VEJS to exchange ideas, build skills, and network. The day-long conference in spring 2020 included guest speakers, breakout sessions, skill-building workshops, and a virtual networking hour. Due to VEJS success in March 2020, it is returning in March of 2021 and will continue to be led by students, for students with support from faculty advisors.
