Mason Publishing Group hosts the Open Textbook Initiative, which was supported by the Mason Student Government. This initiative encourages faculty to use open source textbooks and learning materials when possible.

In accordance with recent changes in Virginia state law 23.1-1308, Mason is developing a policy to encourage (but not require) faculty to adopt open educational resources in their classes. The University Libraries are working in concert with the Faculty Senate and other University stakeholders to develop this policy which will be released soon.
In the meantime, Mason offers a one-stop shop for information on open-source publishing (https://oer.gmu.edu/). The University Libraries offer staff support and financial resources.
