A brief description of on-site renewable electricity generating devices :
In 2010, the reporting year, Georgia Tech's 324KW solar roof on our Campus Recreation Center and the 250 ton Geothermal heat pump were in operation. Both have been in operation since 1995, generating and avoiding energy use equal to the amount of energy used by 500 homes in Georgia each year. In 2011, a new building opened, with a roof garden, solar PV and solar thermal on the roof that equated to 6.5% of the building's energy needs from renewable sources. In 2011, a topping out ceremony took place for a new Carbon Neutral, Net Zero Energy Solutions which will also include renewable energy sources. By year end 2012, Georgia Tech is expected to have over 500kw of renewable energy from solar technology in operations on campus. Georgia Tech has been an early adopter of renewable energy in campus operations since the mid-1990's on our campus and a leader in renewable energy in operations for other education facilities within the city since the 1970's. Georgia Tech was the home of the first DOE National Center of Excellence in Photovoltaics. Georgia Tech's UCEP was established in 1992, a research center which remains very active today.
