A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:
Gustavus has committed to pursuing LEED accreditation for buildings, both new and major remodels or expansions. LEED credit Mr2 focuses on building construction waste management, including C&D. Gustavus’ most recently completed LEED project in 2020, the Nobel Hall of Science Expansion and Renovation project, achieved LEED Gold. For credit Mr2, the project achieved 2 of 2 points. This included keeping records of C&D material tonnage which was done by the construction manager, Kraus-Anderson Construction. The numbers reported are from the most recent material totals, August 2020. This also included a written construction waste management plan, which includes the following information:

“To reduce the solid waste sent to a landfill, individual dumpsters will be located on site as required to dispose of all waste generated. Site-separated recycling will be the method of choice for this project – individual dumpsters will be located on site. Trade contractors will be responsible for placing their waste into the dumpster. The general contractor will insure that waste is placed in the dumpsters and schedule dumpster pick-ups and roll offs to ensure the waste generated onsite is managed properly to prevent waste from building up onsite. The waste management company selected will be responsible for hauling the dumpsters to the recycling centers. The waste management company will be responsible for generating a list of all materials that are recycled or salvaged and sending to the General Contractor on a monthly basis. In addition to these recycling efforts, any disturbed topsoil is anticipated to be reused onsite. However, due to the project scope, it is anticipated that this will be marginal. Furthermore, paper and plastic only receptacles will be located in jobsite offices to insure that waste generated from daily office work is recycled.”
