Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
Yes
A brief description of the incentive program(s):
Thanks to the generous donation of Hope College Alumni a new program is launching in the spring of 2023 to fund faculty stipends to create more courses on sustainability. These funds will be awarded through the Provost's Office and are open to faculty in every department.
Mellon Grand Challenges
A few years ago Hope received a very large grant from the Mellon Foundation to develop curriculum that would allow students to take courses in sequence on certain themes or topics. The overall goal is to develop pathways of courses that students can take for their general education courses. While the Grand Challenge program per se is not focused on sustainability, one of the faculty teams (economist Steven McMullen, geologist Brian Bodenbender, and theologian/ethicist Steve Bouma-Prediger) has been working on a sustainability pathway.
