A brief description of the institution’s wellness and/or employee assistance program(s):
A business or organization is in a unique and responsible position to effectively enhance the wellbeing of its employees. The Hope College Wellness Program is driven by the collective desire to be good stewards not only of our physical bodies but also our healthcare dollars. We believe healthy people lead fuller and more productive lives. We desire that our employees feel that their association with Hope College contributes to their health and wellbeing – physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.
The focus of the employee wellness program is to:
• Increase Awareness,
• Enhance Motivation,
• Build Skills, and
• Create Supportive Environments.
Hope’s Wellness Program provides online behavior tracking, onsite fitness and relaxation classes, seminars, team and individual incentive challenges, biometric assessments, and education that enables employees to be wise healthcare consumers. Hope’s Wellness Program is intentional about developing a culture that encourages healthy behaviors and provides optimal avenues for wellness engagement throughout the day.
We desire to create a community that has an excellent quality of life by focusing on four dimensions of wellness.
Physical: Choosing healthier lifestyle choices such as regular exercise and a balanced diet to optimize your quality of life, to prevent chronic diseases and conditions, and to improve vitality.
Mental: Realizing your own potential, coping healthily with the normal stresses of life, working productively and fruitfully, and giving back to your community.
Financial: Establishing your own sense of financial security and freedom of choice, in the present and in the future.
Spiritual: Finding purpose in life through connections with yourself, others, culture, nature or a power greater than yourself.

Section 7: Campus Community Policies
L. SMOKING POLICY
The Ottawa County Smoke-Free Indoor Air Regulation became effective on January 1, 2008. This regulation requires all public and private employers to prohibit smoking in all enclosed areas and within 25 feet of any entrance, operable window, and ventilation system. Hope College became a smoke-free campus on January 1, 2008.

Smoking (including e-cigarettes) will not be permitted in any campus-owned or -leased building, in any residence hall, apartment, or cottage, on any campus walkway or green space, or outside in college parking lots.

Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is permitted in private vehicles (including those parked in college lots) and on public right-of-ways away from building entrances. Please adhere to the 25-foot distance and dispose of your smoking materials appropriately before reentering the campus area.

The college is supportive of smoking cessation programs and will work with faculty and staff seeking help with their smoking habit. Please contact the Human Resources office for more information.

April 2021 - Wellness Programs

TREE HUGGER CHALLENGE
April 1-April 30
The Tree Hugger Challenge invites you to enjoy nature for 300 minutes over the next 30 days (this averages to 10 minutes a day). Choose something that YOU enjoy doing each day such as enjoying lunch at the park, taking a hike, walking a trail or enjoying a sunset over lake MI! This is on the wellness portal (hopewellness.wellright.com) - if you are not on the wellness portal please email Kathryn (wellness@hope.edu) and she will send you a registration link!

EARTH DAY - MONTH LONG CELEBRATION
Throughout April
April 22th is dedicated as earth day each April. However, due to Covid we are opting to avoid a large group gathering to join forces to keep the environment clean on one specific day and instead shift the focus to April as Environmental Awareness month! This April we want to encourage (and challenge) everyone to get outside, enjoy nature, get exercise and aid to beautify the community/nature while doing it (this would count towards the above challenge minutes, too!).

Starting on April 1st (today) bags, gloves, and local park maps will be available in the lobby in front of Human Resources. There will also be a sign up sheet for a drawing for an Ottawa County Parks pass for individuals who are participating in this endeavor. The drawing will take place on May 1st. https://blogs.hope.edu/sustainability-institute/quality-of-life/april-2021-wellness-program-challenges-help-celebrate-earth-month/
