Zero Waste Event Certification
A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:
Zero Waste Event Certification is a campaign facilitated by students in the Waste Reduction & Resource Awareness Program (WRRAP). It aims to help campus community members host events and gatherings that produce minimal or zero landfill waste. Students can request a meeting with the campus’s Zero Waste Coordinator for a pre-event audit, which helps identify ways to reduce waste. The program is also open to faculty and staff.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
In Academic Year 2015-16, WRRAP certified 6 zero waste events at HSU and engaged 2,450 event attendees in zero waste practices and procedures while at these events. These events included: the Career and Volunteer Expo, the Food Summit, Zero Waste Banquet, HSU Honors Dinner, KRFH Takeover, and California Big Time.

Green Workplace Assessment & Certification Program (GWA)
A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):
During 2015-2016, student-interns of the Humboldt State chapter of PowerSave/Green Campus Program worked with staff and administration offices to evaluate and improve energy efficiency and implement sustainable practices in the workplace. The program, formally titled Green Workplace Assessment & Certification, focuses on energy, water conservation, recycling and waste management, purchasing, community involvement, and transportation. The process of getting a workplace assessed and certified as "green" takes approximately one semester from start to finish. To begin, students involved in the Green Campus program reach out to a sustainability champion who represents the office/department as the primary point of contact. Then the group sends a questionnaire that the champion fills out as a self-assessment mechanism and eventually meets with the champion in person, reviewing office existing conditions in real-time, and discussing improvement possibilities. Interns interested in learning about the GWA experience participate in a mock audit beforehand. Offices are selected for participation in GWA somewhat at random.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
According to a 2014 report from Green Campus , the Green Workplace Assessment Program has evaluated 17 departments and reached more than 280 employees at HSU. The recommended upgrades—everything from installing more efficient lighting to adding power strips to office equipment—translate into more than $36,000 in potential energy savings.
