Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
• Endowment size was taken as of 6/30/2016 and can be found by navigating to http://advancement.humboldt.edu/info-for-campus >> Reports & General Documents >> VSE Data >> page 2, #3 Endowment Market Value • Total Campus Area was calculated by summing the contiguous area of main campus (152 acres) with the Schatz Tree Farm (353 acres) and all other satellite parcels, such as the Telonicher Marine Lab (1.3 acres), the Natural History Museum (.23 acres), the Third St Gallery (0.02 acres), the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center (.94 acres), and the Corp Yard (7.3 acres) for a total of 614.79 acres. • Gross floor area of building space is equivalent to the campus measurement called Basic Gross Square feet, which eliminates covered/unenclosed square feet. It does not include field areas, the 14th Street Residence, the Union Street Duplex, the Wells Fargo Building, the Cogeneration Unit, the Entrance Gates, Redwood Sciences Lab, or the Water Tower. See IC 1 for more detail on exclusions. Square footage for Building 20 and the KHSU Transmitter Site were estimated at 2600 sq ft and 278 sq ft respectively, because formal measurements had not been updated and documented at the time this report was compiled. Details for all other square footage metrics contributing to this sum can be found in the attached document. • Floor area of lab space includes only information about research laboratories, which are given the space codes 0016 and 0017 in the internal database called Facilities Link. The current calculation for lab space yields a more than 1 million square foot discrepancy from the last metric given during our 2013 STARS submission. This is attributed to the fact that version 2.1 of STARS dictates the use of stricter definition for lab space than version 1.2 did, wherein teaching labs and art labs are now excluded. • The calculation for floor area of health care space adheres to Technical Manual specifications, which stipulates the exclusion of non-care space such as hallways, restrooms, elevators, electrical corridors, telecom, custodial, restrooms, lobbies, etc. This number was accordingly calculated using “assignable square feet” for the Student Health Center only. • To calculate energy intensive square footage, HSU counted only data centers and food production spaces. It would be impossible for the campus to calculate "other energy intensive space" (any space with average EUI of at least twice that of office/admin space) because specific buildings and rooms are not sub-metered. The estimation for energy intensive square footage therefore included all room types given the “telecomm” designation in Facilities Link (internal database), which aligns to our campus Information Technology definition that data centers would include space where the primary function is to house servers and network drives. HSU calculated food production square footage by determining square footage in the five buildings where Dining Services (an auxiliary under University Center) prepares food on campus. Specifically, HSU used square footage from only areas containing large pieces of energy intensive equipment, such as dish washers, refrigerated spaces, coolers, or fume hoods in the Jolly Giant Commons, the College Creek Community Center, the Depot, the Hilltop Market, and the Library.
