A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):
Trips, workshops, and clinics are led by student peer mentors who have received extensive training, including completion of SPH-W305 "Introduction to Wilderness Leadership."

The course description is as follows:
This eight-week course will introduce the foundations of outdoor adventure leadership, including an introduction to the core competencies of outdoor living skills, education, leadership, risk management, environmental integration, and planning and logistics. The course emphasizes backcountry leadership and judgement with a broad overview of the relevant theories and practices of the outdoor adventure industry. This course introduces students to the Wilderness Education Association (WEA) curriculum.
Wilderness Education Association includes the following units:
Outdoor living: Skills essential to group/individual sustainability in the field
Environmental Education: Attention to ecological and cultural literacy alongside the planning and management skills needed to ensure preservation through past, present and future connections.

Peer leaders use this training to teach and implement ""Leave No Trace"" ethics on every Outdoor Adventures trip. Trip participants are taught to view outdoor adventure or backcountry experiences holistically, within their ecological, historical, and cultural contexts, not just their recreation component.

Since its founding in 1972 as a Union Board committee, IUOA has helped members of the IU community lead active lifestyles and connect with nature by providing opportunities to participate in trips, workshops, and other activities that foster a love and conservation of the outdoors. Go kayaking on Lake Monroe, or mountain biking in Brown County State Park. Hike in the Smoky Mountains, or go rock climbing in Yosemite National Park.
