The Ogle Center + Theatre Arts/ Music Dept. have been working toward a variety of initiatives, objectives & goals. These are found in the following productions
• Bittersweet Hard Candy: Spring 2021
• Proof: Fall 2021
• The Nerd: Spring 2022
• Glimpses: Spring 2022
The IU Southeast Theatre Department has the following Sustainability Goals:
Self-Care/Sustainable Body – We recognize that creating a sustainable future must first start with creating a sustainable mind and body. To help students to begin their journey down this path we have committed ourselves to:
• Promoting healthy meal and snack alternatives for students in the IU Southeast Theatre Green Room.
• Taking Breaks – promoting and scheduling mindful breaks during the daily production process, in the studios + rehearsal for all technical artisans, actors, director, and stage management team. Not talking business, but actually breaking during breaks. Shedding or taking off the energy of the show by spending time getting out of character as much as getting in.
Environmental Protection – We recognize that the Theatre Arts have the tendency and reputation, of being extremely wasteful and damaging to our earth. We feel strongly that this does not need to be the case and have adopted practices aimed at reducing our harmful environmental impacts.
• Protect rainforests through stopping the use of foreign produced Luan (lumber) and instead utilizing alternative substitutes, such as Revolution Plywood (Poplar) by Patriot Timber (USA).
• Landfill Diversion- Leadership/Students … Inspire by Example/Show and Tell with experience. Various scrap wood/metals/fabrics generated by the production or installation of scenery, costumes, and props are recycled in dedicated containers. Diverting the one stop landfill process. Utilizing already existing resources in reach.
• Ongoing Energy Management - Retrofit theatre lighting with LED units whenever possible.
• Reduce – Label production supplies and materials, such as lumber before storing to reduce unnecessary waste.
• Reuse – Consider using scenery and costumes from past/previous productions before building or buying new.
• Recycle – Cradle to the grave: know when to let something go. (Keep or Weep) Maximize storage space in the production shops by safely recycling materials that are no longer of value to the shop.
Sustainable Finical Future – We recognize that the only way to create a sustainable future is by making sure that the IU Southeast Theatre has a secure sustainable finical future as well.
• Spend Budgets Locally – as a program, we are making a conscious decision to spend our production budgets in our local community first. (Pre-cycling process)
• Pre-cycling, Upcycling + Restoring scenery, lighting, costumes, and props for the present show, while fabricating permanent stock pieces for future generations.
• Salvage – Salvage production materials (wood/fabric) from materials for reuse later, and organize them for easily accessible future use. For example using screws in place of nails during wood construction, for easy deconstruction for reuse. Screw without glue when possible. Torx / Star drive 25 universal screws/ Closing the loop.
• Sustainable Design- Design to deconstruct with temperance, and/or fabricate permanent stock.
• Stock – Become familiar with your stock scenery, costumes, props, etc. Start here (pre-cycle).
• Up-cycle / Re-Imagine – We are constantly considering new ways to create scenery and costumes with new/different materials. “Think outside the box.”
These goals are shared with all representatives that participate in the theatre department.
