A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
Looking for an opportunity for getting students involved, two Iowa State University students created the SHOP (Students Helping Our Peers) student food bank in 2011. Their mission is to help other ISU students in need of food assistance. Located on campus, the SHOP is open three days a week for three hours a day when ISU student volunteers distribute food donated mainly from other students and staff on campus. The service is available to all students who receive food without record, allowing customers to maintain anonymity. The main goal is to help students who can’t afford meals and can’t commute to the local food bank. The SHOP has received national attention, and had an article published on it in Inside Higher Ed:
