A brief description of the programs sponsored by the institution to support underrepresented groups within the student body:
ISU has The Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) office, which works to improve the retention of multicultural students with an emphasis on academic success and student leadership development. MSA establishes partnerships with Iowa State University departments and related organizations in an effort to promote continuous improvements that respond to the needs of multicultural students. Through its learning communities, academic enrichment programs, leadership opportunities, classes, workshops and community activities, MSA connects multicultural students to university and community resources that can assist in their persistence and graduation at Iowa State University. Not only does MSA provide specific programs and services that impact the retention of multicultural students but it also supports multicultural students as they acclimate to the university.
In addition, Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Student Services (LGBTSS) is a safe space for all members of the university community to explore aspects of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression in an open and non-judgmental atmosphere. LGBTSS is committed to providing information and education that enhances the educational experience and overall quality of student life on the Iowa State University campus. LGBTSS and its staff work to promote advocacy, support, visibility, and diversity through programming, a variety of services, and referral. In achieving this mission, LGBTSS strives to promote full inclusion of LGBT persons and their allies at ISU and to eliminate homophobia, heterosexism, transphobia and sexism on our campus.
The Margaret Sloss Women's Center (MSWC) promotes equity and social change on the Iowa State University campus for women students. Through a feminist lens, the center advocates for individuals and groups; provides support, referrals, community and programming; and maintains a safe space in the Sloss House.
