A brief description of the socially responsible investment option for retirement plans:
Iowa State University has offered the CREF Social Choice Fund, a socially screened mix of 60% stocks and 40% bonds in the retirement plan since the fund started in 1996 and added the TIAA-CREF Social Choice Equity Fund when it was offered. By using a percentage of each of these funds an employee can allocate their stock/bond proportions to make their retirement portfolio more aggressive than the 60/40 split, while keeping all their money in socially responsible investments. Iowa State University also offers VALIC as a primary retirement plan. The VALIC investment family offers one all US stock fund called the Socially Responsible Fund and one stock fund that offers both US and international companies called the Global Social Awareness Fund, which are both socially screened.
