Iowa State University is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.
Iowa State is one of sixteen founding university members of the Building Healthy Academic Communities (BHAC) national organization. BHAC is "dedicated to crafting a comprehensive framework that enriches the health and wellness of students, faculty and staff. Members have the opportunity to set national standards for academic health and wellness, share evidence-based practices to enhance health and wellness in students, faculty, and staff, serve as the primary resource for health and wellness programming at American universities and colleges, participate in nationwide research and project evaluations, serve on the Advisory Board, committees and task forces, assist with future BHAC summits, determine educational content for webinars, and gain access to the members-only website for evidence-based tools and resources”. Iowa State participates in monthly conference calls, and also contributes to the online BHAC resource toolkit.

USGBC Iowa seeks to create a positive impact on the region's built environment by accelerating the adoption of green building practices, technologies, policies, and standards. We endeavor to move the green building industry forward with education, awareness, advocacy, and market-based solutions. Iowa State has many faculty and staff members.

The City of Ames Smart Business Challenge (SBC) is a cosponsored student internship opportunity between the city's Electric Services department and the Iowa State University Office of Sustainability. SBC interns engage with local businesses via a sustainability checklist in the same mold as STARS, tailored to each businesses operational profile, and using the results to drive sustainability initiatives. SBC interns, along with the Director of Sustainability, were selected to present on the challenge at the 2018 AASHE Conference & Expo, highlighting the rating framework, engagement and communication initiatives, and examples of positive sustainable improvements and impacts enacted by SBC participants.
Kathy Wellik, Director of Transportation Services, was a guest speaker at: the 2018 National Conference of Fleet Administrators, the 2019 Sustainable Fleet Technology Conference & Expo, and the 2019 NAFA Fleet Management Association Conference.
Karen Rodekamp, ISU Dining Assistant Director of Engagement, was guest speaker at the 2018 Midwest Food Recovery Summit.

The Iowa State University chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association won the ELECTRI International Green Energy Challenge for the fifth year in a row for their work in preparing a proposal for ISU's Family Resource Center to achieve net-zero energy consumption via energy saving measures and distributed energy resources. Six students within ISU’s Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering donated over 130 hours of community service and $550 in material, and also won the Poster Presentation at NECA 2018 Philadelphia.
