Live Green! Earth Month Challenge
A brief description of the campaign:
The Iowa State University Live Green! Earth Month Challenge focused on increasing faculty, staff and students’ active participation in sustainable living through day-to-day activities, as well as enhancing awareness and understanding of the impact of daily choices through offering links to resource materials. The challenge was facilitated via a Google Site where participants logged actions such as turning water off when brushing teeth, riding their bike to class, or volunteering. Students were engaged through the website as well as an online social media campaign/contest. At the end of the challenge, sustainability-focused prizes were awarded to those that earned the most points. The Earth Month Challenge took place during April 2020 and 2021, when many classes were online and students were completing their coursework from home due to the outbreak of COVID-19. At the end of the challenge, prizes were awarded to those who had earned the most points.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
In 2021, 21 people registered AND engaged with the challenge. A total of 1123 points were earned throughout the course of the month-long challenge for actions completed. The most popular challenge items were Learn About Expiration Dates, Turn off the Water While You Brush Your Teeth, Eat Your Fruits and Veggies, Visit Reiman Gardens of a Local Park, Love Your Leftovers, Make a Meal From Scratch, and Use a Reusable Water Bottle. The 2021 results were similar to those observed in 2020, in spite of 2020 having more participants. In 2021, hybrid options were available and allowed people to engage with the challenge in person or online.

2021 Open Access Week
A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
The 2021 Open Access Week included presentations and workshops like “Preprints and the Evolution of Scholarly Publishing”, “Shameless Self-Promotion: Share Your Research to Make an Impact”, “Open Scholar Café”, and a public domain movie night. The week of events is hosted by the Iowa State University Library, and attendees were able to network with OA campus leaders, learn about available channels to publish work openly, and discover free services that can help guide them on the path to open scholarship.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Numbers showed an increase in both submission to and downloads from the Digital Repository in FY2021 compared to FY2020. There was also a 21% increase in the number of uploads and a 12% increase in downloads, which have trended upwards since FY2017. An important campus resource established in 2012, the repository continues to add content while migrating to a new platform.
Optional Fields
InclusAbility
The InclusAbility campaign includes four goals: creating more visibility of people with disabilities across campus and in the community, collaborating on initiatives, development, and resources to increase support and inclusion at Iowa State University, creating intersectional and meaningful programs that highlight the services and support of the Iowa State community, and creating an intentional space for dialogue and learning that fosters a sense of inclusivity for people with disabilities.
Consent is B.A.E. Campaign
“Consent is Before Anything Else” is the campus-wide sexual assault prevention awareness campaign from the Office of Equal Opportunity focused on educating members of the Iowa State community on the definition of consent, and the complexities that can come with avoiding and preventing instances of sexual assault.
Kill-A-Watt Challenge
The Sustainability Committee of Student Government worked with Facilities Planning and Management and the Department of Residence to put on an Earth Month Kill-A-Watt Challenge: a competition among all of the on-campus residence halls to determine which one could reduce its energy consumption the most. Information on energy reduction was made available at the end of each week, and the residence hall that had the greatest reduction was announced. Resulting impacts included a 12.6% average energy reduction among all the residence halls in comparison to average consumption rates from the three years prior to last year.
Cyclones Care
In 2020, the City of Ames, Iowa State University, Story County, Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames Chamber of Commerce and Heartland Senior Services came together for COVID-19 public health messaging surrounding the “Cyclones Care” campaign focusing on the four pillars of healthy behavior and targeting all students, faculty and staff, as well as residents of Story County and the City of Ames. The organizations met regularly and continued collective messaging, alongside each other’s individual planning and protocol initiatives through 2021.
