Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Play Ames: Imagine Your City

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Students in two community planning studios (DSN 564: Sustainable Mobility in Smart Cities and CRP 532: Engaging Residents in Urban Planning: Focus on Ames, Iowa) and the CRP 455/555: Smart and Sustainable Cities course partnered with the city of Ames to improve collective civic engagement in the community. The project, which evolved from efforts to identify better strategies to communicate with citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizes connections with underrepresented groups and ways to engage them more fully in community conversations - especially relevant to policy and process. In completing the project, students researched community demographics toward pairing specific strategies with unique groups. Interviews with planning professionals across the United States were also a part of strategies implemented. The results from this project were published in a report and shared with the Ames City Council.
