Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The number reported above reflects the community service hours for the programs that the Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs sponsors directly: Community Plunge, Service Saturdays, MLK Celebration Week, and Alternative Spring Break. However, this is a small fraction of the estimated total number of community service hours actually performed, given the number of student organizations and athletic teams that conduct community service, as well as community service classes and community-based/service learning projects and internships. OSEMA is working to centralize this data collection in future but estimated that student organizations plus organized volunteer activities accounted for about 20,000 hours. Students volunteering in community service projects or who are involved in student organizations that undertake community service projects are requested to "log" their community service hours using the ICLINK program. However, the actual reporting has been sporadic, at best. For more information, refer to the section in the 2011-2011 Student Organization Guidebook. http://www.ithaca.edu/sacl/osema/docs/guidebook/ In addition, a number of faculty who supervise service learning activities in their courses were asked to estimate the community service hours from their participating students. The community service hours from just those faculty responding totaled more than 17,000 hours.
