A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
The course analysis (attached) is based on the courses offered during the 2021-2022 academic year. That analysis does not include any courses the Registrar categorizes as a practicum, internship, music performance, private lesson, Thesis, Independent Study, Drill Session (languages) and Student teaching per the STARS Technical Guide. Foundational medical courses (e.g. Anatomy & Physiology and Occupational/Physical Therapy connected course) as well as non-performance music courses were counted in course totals.
Courses were determined to be "sustainability-focused" if they focused directly on sustainability theory and/or practice, as well as if the course grappled with a major sustainability issue, including those associated with race, gender, and globalization. If a sustainability issue was mentioned in the primary course-description, it is considered sustainability-focused.
Courses were determined to be "sustainability-inclusive" based on information provided by faculty within a discipline (School of Business and Recreation & Leisure Studies) or if they included a module on sustainability.
The total number of courses and total sustainability-focused or -inclusive courses differs significantly from our 2016 and 2019 STARS reports. In 2016, we included every course offered at IC, rather than excluding performance, clinical, independent studies, etc. per the STARS manual. In 2019, these were eliminated, but multiple course offerings were not included. The 2022 update follows a similar exclusion of topics as 2016, but now also includes multiple sections which we think is a more accurate representation of course offerings.
