A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:
In the past, a committee of faculty from Business, Communications, Health Sciences, and Humanities & Sciences worked with staff from the Office of Energy Management & Sustainability to develop the focus of the Ithaca College Sustainability Literacy Assessment. The committee then developed an assessment that reinforces the importance of everyday choices, as well as general sustainability themes.

A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
The assessment was previously administered to incoming freshmen students through the Ithaca College Seminar (ICSM). ICSM is a series of courses available exclusively to freshman students that orient them to college and the liberal arts education. Faculty teaching ICSM courses supplement lectures with presentations from campus partners/experts, which is how we were able to administer the assessment. In the past, approximately 150 students participated. The assessment consisted of live-polling followed by a review of correct answers and explanation of their importance and application.

Additional information on the ICSM program is available here: https://www.ithaca.edu/academics/ithaca-seminars

A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
Due to COVID disruptions, we are unable to provide any measurable changes from the first assessment. However, our preliminary results indicate that students have a broad understanding of sustainability and how their personal choices impact larger systems. We hope to further administer this test to the same cohort as they prepare to graduate.
